Unsigned Hype: Soul Kings

The Soul Kings were the second artists to appear in The Source's Unsigned Hype column, appearing in the magazine's summer issue of 1990. Led by MC Nicky Dee (only one of two members named), the group from Piscataway, New Jersey impressed The Source with their "positive demo tape". Dee, who had been rhyming for fourteen years at the time of the article's publication, earned comparisons to an early MC Shan due to his "confident, articulate rhyme style". The tape's production is claimed to be "generally good", and DJ Johnny M "shows his agility on the turntables".

Perhaps due to the magazine's limited audience at the time, the Soul Kings failed to gain any major attention and never released any commercial material.

  1. They actually did release material. And had more than 2 members. I was one of them.
